In the Light of Second Chances
Chapter 7 – Calm
Loresho, Nairobi
Some lives are quiet stories of second chances.
The dusty golden light of Nairobi’s late afternoon poured through the jacaranda trees, casting shadows across the path. The quiet of Loresho felt different these days, not somber, not heavy, but quietly hopeful. Since his unexpected love story began to blossom with Wangeci, Daniel’s world had subtly shifted. There was laughter echoing off the garden walls, meals that stretched into hours, and the warmth of family evolving into something new.
But where new beginnings offered warmth, old wounds sometimes ached in the shadow. Daniel had always known that love, however sacred, wasn’t without its thorns.
The early Nairobi sun filtered through the gauzy curtains of the house, casting golden slivers onto the breakfast table where the aroma of Daniel’s signature cinnamon mandazi mingled with the gentle hum of morning conversation. There was a rare calm in the air, that Saturday morning, the kind that comes after a storm, or perhaps just before one.
Michael sat at the head of the table, noticeably lighter since ending things with Tasha. He was clean-shaven, crisp in a maroon polo and tailored jeans – casual, but polished. Ethan was half-sitting, half-leaning on the arm of a rattan chair, animatedly discussing a new UX framework with Zawadi, who sat cross-legged on the couch, in a jumpsuit, curls tied back in a loose bun.
Wangeci, radiant in a flowing Ankara kimono jacket and wide-leg jeans, topped up everyone’s coffee. Wanja, dressed in a sleek moss-green jumpsuit, scrolled through digital mockups of Tulia’s interface. Even Daniel’s olive-toned linen shirt and classic brown loafers seemed more relaxed today, as though he too had found an exhale after years of holding his breath.
This was the kind of peace that was either interrupted by the ringing of the doorbell, a phone call or unexpected news. But today none of that happened. It was quiet and peaceful. The kind of calm that helped you prepare for new challenges.
